Top 5 Accidental Food Inventions
Here are top 5 accidental food discoveries:
Number 5 - Saccharin. The artificial sweetener was accidentally discovered in 1879 when Constantin Fahlberg forgot to wash his hands after working in his laboratory. While having dinner, he felt that the bread had a much sweeter taste than usual. Fahlberg realized that it was due to the coal tar on his unwashed hands.
Number 4 - Popsicles. Did you know that your favorite summer treat, Popsicles was invented in 1905 by an 11 year old named Frank Epperson when he forgot his mixing stick and soft drink on the porch one cold night. Almost two decades later in 1924, Epperson patented his 'frozen ice on the stick.'
Number 3 - Potato Chips. America's favorite snack was accidentally discovered in 1853 by chef George Crum when he tried to calm down an agitated customer who was upset about the french-fries being too thick. Crum sliced the potatoes as thin as possible for the nagging customer and thus potato chips were born.
Number 2 - Corn Flakes. In 1894, Will Kellogg rolled and baked some stale wheat dough and discovered that the dough did not come out in a single larger piece as expected but as small, crispy, baked flakes. Accidentally, Will invented the Kellogg's corn flakes.
Number 1 - Chocolate Chip Cookies were invented in 1930 when Ruth Wakefield ran out of baking chocolate while making cookies. Ruth cut up pieces of a Nestle's semi-sweet chocolate bar as a substitute. She had expected the pieces of chocolate bars to melt on baking but instead they formed a 'creamy texture' giving birth to chocolate chip cookies.
